Te Noho Kotahitanga is our partnership document created in 2001 to express Unitec's commitment to the Treaty of Waitangi as the founding document of New Zealand. Te Noho Kotahitanga confers equal standing on Māori and non-Māori as described by the principles and values inherent in the agreement. These values are at the very centre of Unitec’s purpose, as stated in Manaakitia te Rito – the Renewal Strategy: Led by Te Noho Kotahitanga; we manaaki the success of our learners and communities.
Kia Mataara

Briefing on Te Pūkenga (7 July 2021)
Kei aku nui, kei aku rahi, e rau rangatira mā, Tenā koutou katoa,
Welcome to the Kia Mataara News where Te Roopu Mataara can inform and keep you up to date with the current kaupapa we have here at Unitec. This pānui provides a space to connect you with information we would like to share.
At a meeting held with Te Pūkenga on Mon 25th Jan 2021, Te Roopu Mataara and student representatives strongly expressed the failure of Unitec to uphold Te Noho Kotahitanga, and meet the needs of Māori staff, students and community. This was followed by a second hui held two days later with the MIT/Unitec board to discuss the issues again. The Kia Mataara kaupapa evolved that week as it became evident that Māori staff at Unitec were at a crisis point with no clear way forward.
Our Key Messages
-
Māori senior leadership has been disrespected and dismantled, at both a governance and management level.
-
In our engagement to voice our collective concerns as Māori, there has been a breach in trust and confidence. This has resulted in a vote of no confidence in the Chairperson of the Board of Unitec / MIT.
-
Currently, Māori staff have no Executive Māori leader and are feeling culturally unsafe.
-
The rejection of Māori recommendations in these processes, in particular the call for co-leadership in the appointment of the CEO and integrated Executive leadership team, is the basis for our claims of institutional racism.
-
Our partnership agreement, Te Noho Kotahitanga, and Te Tiriti o Waitangi, which reinforces mana ōrite, have been ignored
